Five Premier Sports at Westlake Girls High School

Westlake Gils High School in Auckland, New Zealand, is recognized both nationally and internationally as a school with outstanding success both academically and sporting. We offer a very wide range of sports however our five major ones are Rowing, Tennis, Football, Badminton and Netball.

Rowing

Over a 30 year period WGHS (Westlake Girls High School) has developed en enviable reputation in the rowing world, consistently achieving in the top five schools at National level. WGHS is currently running a squad of 50 girls in under 15 – 18 categories. Rowing is a Premier Sport at WGHS providing a pathway for girls to excel at the highest level. WGHS recent achievements include 12 gold medals, one silver and two bronze, placing WGHS in 4th place out of a total of 44 schools. WGHS aims to be Number one.

The rowing programme runs for eleven months of the year, has one full time professional school based coach and four part timers. The modern fleet of boats is updated each year. Training takes place at two excellent locations and a school based gym programme helps girls to maintain fitness.

Tennis 

WGHS offers tennis from beginners to competitive level. We are currently regarded as the Number Two Girls School in New Zealand, and aim to become Number One. A comprehensive coaching programme, organized and implemented by professional coaches (from a local tennis club) runs throughout the year. Westlake Girls has six covered courts in our covered ‘cloud complex’ as well as three outdoor courts which can be used throughout the year for training.

Games take place in Term 1 and Term 4 of each year. A player competing in the Premier Team in Term 4 must have completed a set number of games to be eligible to compete in the finals in Term 4. However, a player joining the school mid-year (July) is eligible to play in the intermediate tem in Term 4 and trial for the Premier Team to play in Term 1 in the following year.

The cost inclusive of training and games is NZ$ 80 per term. We can assist students to join a local Tennis club, should they wish to also play interclub Tennis.

Football

WGHS has the largest artificial turf development in Australasia, encompassing cricket, hockey and football fields designed to meet the FIFA 2** rating (the highest possible), netball and cricket ratings. The school has a successful history in football and regularly has numerous teams competing annually in the local North harbor and Auckland competitions.

Football is played in Terms 2 and 3 with games taking place on Wednesday afternoons from the 1st X1 to the junior B and for students wishing to lay the game socially there is a 7-a-side competition that plays on Tuesday afternoons at school. The school has goo working relationships with the local football clubs that provide expert coaching through the season. We are currently ranked within the top ten for football.

Badminton

WGHS are the current New Zealand Secondary School Badminton Champions, a title we have held for the past four years. Badminton is one of the strongest sports at WGHS with the school dominating the national, regional and local competitions for many years. Seniors play badminton in Term 2 and Juniors play in Term 3 at both the schools facilities and the local regional Badminton hall. 

The cost inclusive of training and games is NZ$ 80 for the year.

Netball

The school has a successful history in netball and regularly has over 40 netball teams competing annually in the North Harbour Competition. Netball is the schools largest participated in sport during Terms 2 and 3 and offers students the opportunity to compete at the elite of social levels. WGHS has world class netball facilities with four covered courts and three outdoor courts that ensure taining can occur without weather interruption. 

Fees for games and training are NZ$ 200 for Team 1 nd Team 2 and NZ$ 150 for other teams.
