Tauraroa Area School, Northland (age 11 - 18)

Locations

Tauraroa Area School is a vibrant and caring school with a clear focus: student achievement. Our positive approach continues to produce outstanding results in academic, leadership, sporting and cultural areas. Students of our school learn in an environment of mutual respect, with an emphasis on sound learning and teaching practice.

We enjoy outstanding facilities, including an excellent swimming pool, gymnasium, extensive computer equipment and support and well resourced classrooms and specialist teaching areas. Situated in a picturesque rural location, in an area experiencing strong population growth, the school offers an ideal learning environment. It is no surprise that our school is enjoying a growing roll and growing reputation.

Tauraroa Area School is situated about 25km from Whangarei, on a sealed road. The school is about four kilometers from the village of Maungakaramea, which has a garage with a shop and postal facilities, a sports complex and a hall. With a growing roll of over 440 students from year levels 0 to 13, the school is large enough to have the advantages of a range of specialist teachers and facilities, yet small enough to retain the flexibility and pastoral support individual students need.

The school is staffed with approximately 33 full-time teachers. There are Teacher Aides and ESOL Teachers, an Executive Officer, a Student Services Officer, Learning Support Unit, Librarian and a full time Caretaker.

We have a fantastic co-curricular programme with very interesting options like clay shooting, dance, choir, bands and the usual sports teams. Outdoor activities are also very important in the school and we have our own climbing ropes course and a lodge in the forest nearby. Northland is known for its’ strength in hockey.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award is a programme for 14 - 25 year olds which is open to all young people in NZ regardless of background or ability. It is an internationally recognised award with more than 130 countries world-wide involved. Tauraroa Area School is pleased to now be an Award Unit and able to offer the programme.

The programme is about enabling young people to develop and build on their own strengths, interests and personalities to prepare them for the exciting adventure of life. Students involved participate in physical activity, community service, develop new skills and go on adventurous journeys as part of the requirements for The Award. At Tauraroa Area School we encourage students to "be the best they can be." Being a member of The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award is an excellent way to do just that.
