Takapuna Grammar School is a state co-educational secondary school established in 1927 to serve the needs of Devonport, Belmont, Bayswater and Takapuna and the wider North Shore community. It is one of Auckland's historic schools with a long proud history and fine tradition.
Its mission is to provide high quality, balanced education in a positive teaching and learning environment. Students are assisted to reach their full potential and are challenged to strive constantly for excellence in their academic, cultural, social, recreational and sporting activities.


Takapuna Grammar School prepares students to attend universities and technical institutes. The school has a reputation for academic excellence and offers a wide range of courses. The option structure is multi-level allowing flexibility in selecting the most appropriate individual course.
Facilities. For that the school has excellent facilities including a large sports hall and second gymnasium, library, computer rooms, music suite and practice rooms, a drama suite, art block and dark rooms, technology block, swimming pool and extensive sports fields.

Takapuna Grammar School has a long tradition of musical and drama productions. There are a wide range of musical groups from classical quarters to jazz bands, harmony singing, vocal and instrumental opportunities. Twenty three sports are currently offered and overseas students often participate in basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis.

Takapuna Grammar School welcomes students from overseas both as international fee-paying students and as exchange students through recognised organisations such as Rotary and AFS. All students are in the care of the International Department. Students from overseas with residency permits must be living with their parents within the school's zone.

The University of Auckland has acknowledged the valuable contribution made by Takapuna Grammar School in preparing international students for advanced study at University level.

All International students are required to have a caregiver resident in Auckland and be in a homestay situation.

Courses at Takapuna Grammar School

The Year 9 programme
at Takapuna Grammar School is an introductory course consisting of:
English / ESOL; Mathematics; Health & Physical Education; Science; Social Studies. Learning Area where there is some choice of subjects, chosen from; French; German; Japanese; Te Reo Maori; Spanish.

Extension and Support is offered in Year 9. Some students may, after consultation with senior staff, choose the following courses; Special Education Courses; Sports Institute (this would be in place of their Technology option); Learning Support Programme (this would be in place of their Language option).

The Year 10 programme at Takapuna Grammar School is an exploratory course consisting of: English / ESOL; Health and Physical Education; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies; Enterprise and Financial Literacy. Optional Subjects: All students will study 2 options chosen from the following (only ONE from each group) Group languages: French, German, Japanese, Maori, English for Speakers of Other Languages. Goup arts: Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Sports Institute. Group Technologies: Technology Food, Technology Matrials Hard, Technology Materials Soft, Graphics.

Level 1 - Year 11 The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (the NCEA) is the national qualification for all Year 11 students. If a student gains 80 or more credits at Level 1, they will gain a National Certificate of Educational Achievement, Level 1. They must, however, have gained at least 10 credits from nominated literacy standards and 10 credits from numeracy standards.

Level 2 - Year 12 The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 2) will be awarded to students who are credited with 80 credits or more , of which a minimum of 60  credits is at level 2 or above, from anywhere on the National Qualifications Framework. Credits gained for the NCEA (Level 1) may be used towards meeting the requirements of the NCEA (Level 2) as well as other qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework.

Level 3 – Year 13 The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3) will be awarded to people who are credited with 80 credits or more , of which a minimum of 60 credits is at Level 3 or above, from anywhere on the National Qualifications Framework.  Credits gained for the NCEA (Level 1) and NCEA (Level 2) may be used towards meeting the requirements of the NCEA (Level 3) as well as other qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework.

Year 13 Scholarship Takapuna Grammar School encourages students studying subjects at the Year 13 level to consider entering the Scholarship examinations. These examinations are designed so that top performing students can demonstrate excellence academically. They enable them to apply skills of critical thinking, problem solving and applying and relating knowledge – skills inherent in our teaching and learning philosophy.

Students will be asked to indicate their intention to enter scholarship later in the term and departments will be setting up a number of structures to tutor students in their subjects.

NZ$ 15,000 per year (plus NZ$ 1,600 registration cost)
