Locations

Takapuna Normal Intermediate School is a great place to learn, teach and work. We pride ourselves on seeking excellence in both curriculum and extra curricular activities by personalising study for the emerging adolescent.

The Takapuna Normal Intermediate Schools’ curriculum is designed to provide students with life-long learning skills which will enable them to actively participate in a rapidly changing world. Learning is at the core of our school and assisting students to be passionate participants as successful learners is a major goal.

Takapuna Normal Intermediate School is located in the heart of the North Shore of Auckland and has been described as an innovative school that has a knowledge-era approach to learning. Takapuna Normal Intermediate School is recognised as a school that seeks excellence in the provision of quality programmes for all international students. High expectations for learning combined with an atmosphere of encouragement and support provides students with a wonderful, memorable international experience.

Takapuna Normal Intermediate welcomes enrolment applications from international students. At present there are students from around the world studying at the school. They come for a first class education and to take advantage of the many academic, cultural and sporting opportunities that Takapuna Normal Intermediate offers. We pride ourselves in meeting the standards for hosting international students as set out in the New Zealand Governments Code of Practice. A code that ensures that all students from overseas receive the best possible care while studying and living in New Zealand.

Takapuna Normal Intermediate is a leading New Zealand school providing quality learning outcomes for the ‘emerging adolescent’ aged 11-13. Its link to Auckland University as a provider for teacher education programmes ensures that the school continually seeks wise practice in all fields of teaching and learning based on sound research. The school is seen as very innovative and hosts teachers from around the world who come to observe New Zealand education in action.

Visitors often comment on the positive peer culture and the focus students have for their own learning.
The school is fully accredited to offer the PYP International Baccalaureate programme. Owen Alexander, Principal, believes that developing a global perspective will better prepare students to succeed in a modern world for both local and international students. The school is very proud that it has students who represent a variety of nationalities and speak a number of languages. For students wishing to improve their English the school offers both short term and long term (one year) programmes.

Takapuna Normal Intermediate School not only celebrates great success in the academic curriculum but offers dynamic programmes in dance, art and music. The many sport options cater for beginners as well as those seeking challenging competition.

New Zealand Primary School Curriculum

The New Zealand Curriculum aims to provide a quality learning experience for all students. At Takapuna Normal Intermediate School we want young people to be confident, actively involved life long learners.
Through the learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Health, Physical Education, Social Sciences and Technology we value excellence, innovation, inquiry, curiosity, diversity, equity, community and participation. We aim to develop key competencies that will lead to success in the 21st century.

Literacy. At Takapuna Normal Intermediate School English is about the study, use and enjoyment of the English language and its literature. It can be communicated orally, visually and in writing. Learning English encompasses learning the language, learning through the language and learning about the language.

Numeracy. Everyday we face mathematical challenges in our lives, from balancing our bank account to finding a bargain. At Takapuna Normal Intermediate School we focus on equipping our students with the skills they will need in the real world.

Inquiry Learning. An old proverb states: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand." The last part of this statement is the essence of inquiry-based learning. Memorizing facts and information is not the most important skill in today's world. Facts change, and information is readily available – what's needed is an understanding of how to find, make sense of, and use relevant information for specific purposes.

Science is a way of investigating, understanding and explaining the natural, physical world. In order to develop scientific knowledge, understanding and explanation, people generate and test ideas, make observations, carry out investigations and construct models.

The Social Sciences learning area is about how people participate in society and how society operates. It has significance for people in their everyday interactions as citizens and members of communities in New Zealand and the world.

Physical Education (P.E.) and Health are an integral part of the unique school culture here at Takapuna Normal Intermediate School.

Technology is the creative and purposeful use of human knowledge, skills, and physical resources to solve practical problems. It involves developing artifacts, systems, and environments - intellectual and practical - that people create to expand their potential.

The Arts at Takapuna Normal Intermediate School consist of four disciplines Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. As part of their tech and specialist studies students will experience all of these areas over their two years at T.N.I.S. Arts education is essential to the development of communication skills and expression. The Arts stimulate imagination, thinking and understanding. As expressions of culture, the arts pass on and renew our heritage and traditions and help to shape our sense of identity. They are an essential element of daily living and lifelong learning and a valuable part of the school culture at T.N.I.S..

Learning languages is a new learning area; it was introduced as the result of a recommendation in the Curriculum Stocktake Report. All schools catering for students in years 7–10 are required to offer a language programme.
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

Over the last year Takapuna Normal Intermediate School has been implementing the International Baccalaureate (IBO) Primary Years Programme (PYP) as a candidate school. In the near future we will have an authorisation visit to review our progress towards full accreditation.
