The name Waiariki, "water of the gods", was chosen to emphasise the regional nature of the institute and also because the name had significant meaning for the large Maori population. The Waiariki area corresponds closely with that of the Waiariki Maori land district. In addition, the name is appropriate because of the region's distinctive thermal activity.

Waiariki Institute of Technology provides up-to-date and relevant vocational training in key industries such as forestry, tourism, hospitality, and the trades, which are vital to our region’s growth and success. Providing the skilled employees these industries need is one of the institute’s goals. As a leading Institute of Technology we offer a wide range of programmes from certificates and diplomas to postgraduate degrees and learning opportunities that are relevant to both our region and its residents. We are committed to working in partnership to raise and increase aspiration and achievement.

The campus is surrounded by green pastures, native trees and forest with easy links to free bus services, and the centre of town. Students enjoy the campus life and facilities of the library, language laboratory, open-access computer rooms, Wi-Fi, mix with local students, sports centre, cafe, restaurant, prayer room, childcare centre and Tangatarua Marae.

Waiariki is a Government owned public institution. It is a signatory to the New Zealand Ministry of Education Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. It has qualifications which are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and have international recognition.

Waiariki delivers applied learning at degree, diploma and certificate levels in technical, vocational and professional fields. There are excellent employment opportunities for graduates.

Waiariki's courses and qualifications have been developed specifically to meet the needs of students, industry and the community. These qualifications are aligned with the vocational requirements of industries in this region. Some have been developed nationally and may be offered by other providers and you will see these listed using the words 'National' or 'New Zealand' in their title.

Now Waiariki has created a way for you to spend less time – and money – gaining a high quality industry focused diploma! Complete a two-year qualification (restrictions apply) in approximately 18 months at a special tuition fee of only ,000.

Pay the fee in full and you may be eligible to receive the Visa for full course duration. Alternatively, the fee can be paid in two instalments: ,270 for the first year, and ,730 paid prior to study commencing in year two.

Waiariki also provides:

  • Free bus service throughout Rotorua city seven days a week for the duration of your course
  • Free Wi-Fi for your laptop or smartphone on campus


Accommodation: Accommodation arranged through Waiariki includes homestay with a New Zealand family or Waiariki House, a hostel located in the heart of Rotorua. The other accommodation option is flatting (sharing a house with others) that you would arrange through a private rental accommodation agency. Waiariki has recently purchased a holiday park next door to the campus and future plans include on-site student accommodation.
