Locations

Mountainview High School, an exciting co-educational secondary school set in Timaru in the beautiful South Canterbury district of New Zealand’s South Island. Mountainview offers its students an extensive range of subjects to ensure that every student gains the academic qualifications and social skills essential for success beyond school. A full range of musical, sporting and cultural activities enables every student to maximise their experience. We are proud of our NCEA examination results, having the highest pass rates at all three NCEA levels of the Timaru state secondary schools.

Our learning facilities and resources are set amid park like surroundings, an environment which is the envy of most schools in New Zealand. The co-educational environment provides the ultimate platform for the development of each person; a preparation for their future world where acceptance, tolerance and an empathy for others is essential. International students are a very important part of our school community and we attract people from a wide variety of countries.

At Mountainview High School we work together to make good choices, learn and succeed. We feel proud of our school which is well resourced, well disciplined and has excellent teachers who provide every student with the skills they need to reach their potential. Our central belief is that every child has the capacity to succeed and progress, taking responsibility for their own actions and developing their confidence and self esteem to lead others to do the same.

We encourage initiative and innovation at all levels, increasing student responsibility as they move through the school. In this way our senior students develop into responsible and mature role models. Mountainview is an inclusive community which embraces individual difference and tolerance. Its community understands and respects the multicultural character of our country, celebrating our cultural diversity. At Mountainview we endeavour to be the best at everything we do.

Extracurricular activities offered include golf, skiing and snowboarding, tramping sailing and a variety of sports teams engaging in regular competition, including basketball, badminton, table tennis, soccer, rugby, volleyball and hockey. Tuition in musical instruments is available and music and drama play an important part in school life.

Subjects

Mountainview offers its students a comprehensive range of subjects which will equip them for life beyond secondary school. Students are able to select their subjects from the handbook, Future View, which is issued to each student from Year 10 to Year 13. An extensive counselling programme works with each individual and their family to set goals which lead to further study or career options beyond school.

The Mountainview curriculum is structured to develop the whole person as they take their journey through their secondary education. Years 9 and 10 provide a breadth of subjects which allow students to explore their interests and undertake a wide curriculum experience. Upon reaching the first year of NCEA, students are still encouraged to keep a broad subject base, before specialising further in their senior years.

The Junior School subjects are divided into core and option subjects. Core subjects are compulsory. English and Mathematics are compulsory at Year 11, only English is compulsory in Year 12, with no compulsory subjects in Year 13.

The co curricular activities at Mountainview encourage students to experience a variety of opportunities while at the school. Sporting and cultural pursuits provided in a safe environment seek to develop the broader aspects of education and develop life time interests in chosen fields. A full range of sporting activities, music, drama, theatre, chess, debating, dragster racing and kapa haka complement the range of activities offered.
