Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua

The name Waiariki, "water of the gods", was chosen to emphasise the regional nature of the institute and also because the name had significant meaning for the large Maori population. The Waiariki area corresponds closely with that of the Waiariki Maori land district. In addition, the name is appropriate because of the region's distinctive thermal activity.
