Academic Plus High School with Volunteering in New Zealand

Locations

Experience high school in New Zealand while making a difference, volunteering on local sporting, environmental or social projects. Plus have the option to volunteer in South America on your way home.

Academic Plus Volunteer™ is currently offered at seven schools throughout New Zealand. Our schools are in a range of rural, semi-rural and city locations and we have both co-educational and single sex options available. Each school has limited Academic Plus Volunteer™ places available. Our seven schools from north to south are:

Tauraroa Area School: a Year 1-13 Co-Educational in Rural Northland, 25 Minutes from Whangarei City and 90 Minutes from Auckland.

St Mary’s Diocesan School: a Girls’ only, Integrated Anglican School in Stratford, Taranaki. 

Wanganui Girls’ College: a Girls’ only School in Wanganui City.

Upper Hutt College: a Co-Educational School in a Suburban Location, 25 Minutes From Wellington City.

Villa Maria College: a Girls’ only, Integrated Catholic School on the Western Fringe of Christchurch.

Taieri College: a Co-Educational School in a Semi-Rural Location, 15 Minutes from Dunedin City. 

Oxford Area School: A year 1-13 co-educational school in the rural village of Oxford, 40 minutes from Christchurch City.

What's Involved

  • An academic course at your chosen school including exciting subjects and extra-curricular activities.
  • Up to 5 hours per week of volunteering on your chosen sporting, social or environmental project.
  • Live with a homestay family from within the school community.
  • Optional travel with an international student travel company within NZ and Australia during school holidays.
  • Optional volunteer project of up to 4 weeks within a public school in South America on your way home.

Who can apply?

Academic Plus Volunteer™ is open to applicants aged 16-19. It is well suited to students in their final years of schooling and those who have finished school in their home country. While the programme does require you to attend high school while in New Zealand, our high schools offer a range of interesting subjects that allow you to try out new things, such as outdoor education, specialised sports subjects, performing arts, tourism, food technology and more.

Volunteer New Zealand:

While attending high school in New Zealand, you will volunteer for up to five hours per week on your chosen project. Below are some examples of the volunteer projects we have available. These are only a small sample of the volunteer projects you can choose from. Contact us (info@studynewzealand.eu) and we can let you know which projects will suit your interests.

Sports Coaching

Volunteer as a coach, manager or referee in your chosen sport.

Kiwi Sanctuary

Assist with breeding programmes for our endangered and iconic Kiwi bird. Help to maintain predator free sanctuaries for Kiwi and other native New Zealand species.

Riding for the Disabled

Help out at a local Riding for the Disabled group, providing therapeutic horse riding for anyone with a disability.

Volunteer Projects in Chile:

On your way home from New Zealand, you can choose to do a short volunteer project in Chile.

These projects are based in public schools in Santiago and Curacavi.

English Tutoring

Assist with conversational English, giving the Chilean students the opportunity to practice their English.

Sports Coaching

Help out with various sports at a public school.

Details and options

Projects are for between one and four weeks, to be completed at the end of your Academic Plus Volunteer programme. These projects are optional.

Learn Spanish

While volunteering in Chile, you can choose to take one on one Spanish lessons. While some Spanish would be an advantage for the Chilean projects, beginners are still welcome.

Homestay in Chile

While in Chile you will be homestayed with a Spanish speaking family. Homestays will be hand-picked by our trusted Chilean partners.

Pricing for these programmes

Below is our pricing structure. As our programmes are individualised, the total cost will vary depending on the course length and options chosen. Please contact us for a quote. Please note all prices are in NZ Dollars

HOMESTAY IN NZ: NZ$ 220 per week

INSURANCE: 12 months: NZ$ 500; 6 months: NZ$ 250; 3 months: NZ$ 137 Southern Cross Travel Insurance StudentMax is our preferred option

CHILE VOLUNTEER OPTION: 2 weeks: NZ$ 2,200; 3 weeks: NZ$ 2,500; 4 weeks: NZ$ 2,800. These prices include the volunteer project in a public school, homestay and meet and greet in Chile.

Optional one on one Spanish lessons: NZ$ 300 per week (3 hours per day, 5 days per week)
